The history of wool carpet goes back a long, long way. The cotton mills in the late 1800s developed in Dalton, Georgia, now known as the “Carpet Capital of the World.” A land made of hard-packed clay and desolate farmland; the tufted fibers of carpeting began here amidst a group of people who were not only independent but enterprising.

Many people prefer wool to other fibers, with wool having major advantages. As a natural fiber, it disperses skin moisture as it sheds water, provides warmth, keeps and raises body temperature, resists flame and static electricity, and reduces noise. It is very resistant to fading of its color, thereby fading of its design, and will not fade in color—and has high performance ratings with wool dyes as it chemically bonds inside the wool fibers of the carpet or rug.

In the early carpet origins, cotton carpet was a forerunner of the major carpet industry of today. Wool carpeting and synthetic fibers later developed in the United States from this early cotton chenille bedspread design—eventually mats and rugs were manufactured with the same machine methods as the bedspread before WWII. By 1952, this cotton industry was the 3rd largest consumer of the Georgia grown cotton with 500,000 annual bales of cotton used in 1950. The companies Alexander Smith, Bigelow, and Karastan wool carpet dealers were the carpet companies that began in those early days, continuing today in Georgia as Mohawk Industries divisions.

Natural wool carpets are a major part of natural carpet fibers, with natural wool carpets considered to be the highest quality carpet that can be purchased. Today, with the development of the carpet tile, its advantages of the wool carpet tiles have the look of floor tile but the ease of carpet--which has made it extremely popular to the public. In addition to carpet dealers, wholesale wool carpet is also available to the public. The wool carpet remnants sometimes can be purchased at a discount price, if it fits the measurements of a particular spot where it is needed.

A major advantage of using wool broadloom carpet pieces, wool carpet tiles, wool carpets, or wool rugs is that they absorb toxic gases out of the atmosphere with a major emphasis of combustion gases, such as sulphur dioxide, which have been absorbed by indoor surfaces. It is hard to see such things when wool carpet cleaning is done, but in actuality with enough research, it is easily seen that installing wool has major advantages. Cleaning wool carpet methods or cleaning wool carpet stains are not the whole picture of wool carpet, with nylon actually absorbing quicker but wool’s absorption lasting much longer.
