The Persian rugs are usually from the Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and similar Middle East or Central Asia areas. Whether the rug is special antique Persian rugs, discount Persian rugs, or an Ebay Persian rug on auction, the quality is what is important--decided by professional appraising antique Persian rugs. Remember to check and see if the Persian rug is original or an American imitation.

But basically, the Persian area rug is simply that—a Persian rug—unless a little research is done on the rug’s history which dates back to Ancient Persia (c. 500 B.C.). Honest appreciation can only be done with the recognition that it is not just a rug, but also a message from the past. Each Persian rug has a story to tell. One example is the Chobi Rugs Collection from Pakistan, which are also called the Peshawar rugs. They are natural rugs of soft and muted designs, with natural dyes and Ghazni handspun wool, made with varying shades of one color throughout the rug’s pile.

The Persian rug originates from Iranians, the first carpet weavers of the ancient civilizations of 2,500 years ago. Yet they are considered masters of the trade today, due to the layers of creativity that have been brought forth from the past. The rugs were originally made to provide a floor entrance for the nomadic tribesmen, made by the women of the tribes. Over the years, the rugs were transferred through war and economic trade to kings and noblemen, to take such luxurious and wealthy goods back to their homes.

The Persian Gabbeh rugs are made in countries like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and other Persia areas. Many of these rugs are exported directly from south Persian tribes—through the Shiraz and Tehran divisions—to other countries. A Gabbeh rug is one of the best cut of coarsely woven Iranian tribal rugs knotted for their personal use. Its main characteristics are a low density and thick pile, with geometric and symbolic shapes and style designs. Designed in a different way than the Persian rug, the Gabbeh rug’s design is to tell a story, convey an emotion, or form a landscape that forms a unique work of art. What is called “knock-offs” are cheap imitations from Turkey, India, China, or Egypt—they are not handmade, and contain inferior wool with chemical dyes. These imitations usually have a white fringe, whereas the original Gabbeh does not.

To find anything out about Persian rugs it is possible to check a Persian rug dealer online, which is known for selling a Persian silk rug, geometric Persian rugs, dealer Persian rug, or Persian rug and carpet. But make sure they are the original rugs, and do the research well.
